Introduction
Whirlpool dishwashers use a float switch to monitor the water level inside the appliance during the fill cycle. If the float switch stops working correctly, the dishwasher may fail to fill, stop mid-cycle, or overfill with water.
Replacing the float switch can restore proper water level control and allow the dishwasher to operate normally again.
What This Means
Inside the dishwasher tub is a small plastic float that rises as water enters the appliance. When the water reaches the correct level, the float activates the float switch underneath the dishwasher.
The float switch then signals the dishwasher to stop filling with water.
If the switch fails, the dishwasher may misread the water level and behave unpredictably.
Replacing the switch restores the normal water level safety function.
Tools Needed
Replacing the float switch on most Whirlpool dishwashers requires only a few basic tools.
Common tools include:
• Phillips screwdriver
• Flashlight
• Needle-nose pliers
• Multimeter (optional for testing)
These tools help remove the lower access panel and disconnect the switch wiring.
Step 1: Disconnect Power
Before working on the dishwasher, disconnect electrical power.
This can be done by:
• Unplugging the dishwasher
• Turning off the circuit breaker
Never perform repairs while the appliance is connected to power.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Access Panel
The float switch is located underneath the dishwasher tub.
To access it:
-
Locate the lower access panel at the bottom front of the dishwasher.
-
Remove the mounting screws holding the panel in place.
-
Carefully pull the panel away from the dishwasher.
This exposes the internal components beneath the appliance.
Step 3: Locate the Float Switch
The float switch sits directly below the float assembly inside the dishwasher tub.
It is usually a small switch with two electrical wires attached and a small actuator lever that responds when the float moves upward.
Using a flashlight can make the component easier to identify.
Step 4: Disconnect the Wiring
Once the switch is located, disconnect the electrical connectors attached to the switch terminals.
Pull the connectors gently and avoid pulling on the wires themselves.
This isolates the switch from the dishwasher wiring.
Step 5: Remove the Old Float Switch
Most Whirlpool float switches are secured with a small mounting screw or plastic clip.
To remove the switch:
• Remove the mounting screw or release the clip
• Slide the switch out of position
• Note the orientation before installing the replacement
Keeping the orientation the same ensures the float activates the switch correctly.
Step 6: Install the Replacement Switch
Place the replacement float switch in the same position as the original.
Then:
• Secure it using the mounting screw or clip
• Reconnect the wiring terminals
• Confirm the actuator moves freely when the float is lifted
Proper alignment ensures the float triggers the switch at the correct water level.
Step 7: Reassemble the Dishwasher
After the new switch is installed:
-
Reattach the lower access panel.
-
Tighten the mounting screws.
-
Restore electrical power.
Run a short cycle to confirm the dishwasher fills and stops filling correctly.
